Hey thanks for this! I participated in NaNoWriMo last year and tried out Schrivener. I loved the product, but life happened and I wasn't able to finish. Has any one checked out yWriter5 at spacejock website created by simon hayes? It's free and works very good. No pictures but a lot of good features.
Yes Michael, I actually used yWriter for almost a year and a half before Scrivener was released for Windows. It is a great piece of software and free! I personally prefer Scrivener as it has more robust features and options than yWriter. This said, I can't knock yWriter. Simon Hayes is a great contributor to the writer's community.

Zoe, I have also tried yWriter quite extensively. Scrivener and yWriter are actually very similar in their approach. Scrivener just has more bells and whistles. yWriter is worth a try if you are looking for a free alternative. Both are excellent for any fiction writer!
